Bordeaux can provide value for sure. And its not so much that we didn’t enjoy the wines – they are what they are. Bordeaux is always difficult when young – expensive or cheap. I think value in Bordeaux will generally come from a number of areas – 1) 2nd labels, 2) smaller, lesser known appellations – - villages, 3) projects from better known wine makers of Bordeaux and 3) white Bordeaux.
White Bordeaux is great – and not as common as one would think.
Keep in mind, 2007 Bordeaux (rouge) is as young as it gets – so these wines need time. The Haut Gay 2006 is a much more expressive wine, one you should look for, and still $13 or so.
Keep trying Bordeaux. The values are there. We found that the $13 bottle behaved much like the $37 bottle, and thus, was a value.
I hope this helps.
